The Mouse

I like what you have given me,

O my songs, scalloped chessmen

Of emotions or of elaborate indifference.

Your determining factor is a thing like the weather

That comes and goes, and stays,

What we lean out of, and into

While it arrives, deaf and gracious.

And the houses that are no more savor vividly

The lace that straps it to time, that

Slowly burning cylinder.

You see it ignites even deliberate

Apathetic lies.

What is solemn in each of us

Is forced to stand and defend

Other interests like the staging of it.

One whirls like a leaf

Without and within rain, there is no imagining

The cruelty, yet forbearance looks steep

To us now, all that planning.

Who did they think would be taken in by it?

Because the definiteness is cruel,

Makes everything shipshape. Do

I think of taking your hand,

Spiced recollections zeroing in?

But someone recommended a dim polaroid.

The square is empty now, and furred with snow,

That we used to get off at, our favorite

Stop though we didn’t know it then

When all parents could lean together,

Open to what is ominous

And still stays banded within the old frame.
